China's manufacturing industry will have to commit to innovation

January 03, 2015

Exporting equipment to other countries via the international market, especially in order to strengthen the cooperation with emerging countries, will not only help the emerging countries with the transformation and development of their national infrastructure, but it will also help the Chinese market digest their excess capacity and improve the overall quality of the equipment. Experts point out that, due to the increasingly complex international economic situation, the Chinese manufacturing industry faces many challenges. In response, the Chinese government has started to push the manufacturing industry into a strategic development towards a high-tech equipment manufacturing industry. By doing this, China will increase its industrial competitiveness enough to bring forth a fundamental shift from ‘made in China’ to ‘created in China’.

China is committed to transform the manufacturing industry into a pillar industry of the national economy within the allotted time of the 12th Five Year Plan, realizing the change from a quantity-based to a quality-based industry. It is estimated that by 2020, the sales from high-tech equipment manufacturing will amount to 30% of all equipment manufacturing sales.

The main topics during the Fourth China Manufacturing Business forum were on ‘independent innovation’ and on ‘high-tech and intelligent manufacturing’. Mr. Subo, vice-minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, emphasizes that being innovation-driven means trying our best to strengthen independent innovation and improve our core competence. In order to develop the high-tech equipment manufacturing industry, we need to solve three problems. Firstly, we need to strengthen and improve our industry’s basic capacity. He added that many basic machine parts, which are made in China, break two or three times faster than their foreign counterparts. For example, most pump valves, that are used in Chinese power generating equipment, are imported from other countries. Furthermore, 95% of high-tech numerical control systems are imported. The quality and durability of equipment that is made in China are the main things we need to focus on. Secondly, we need to strengthen and combine every type of idea – original, integrated and introduced from abroad – to give birth to new levels of innovation. Last but not least, we need to pay a lot of attention to developing the market itself.
